The first choice in painting
The first thing to do when painting is choose a color. You should decide if you want to paint the walls, trim, doors, baseboards or ceiling as well.
You can visit paint stores like Dulux Paints, Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore. Or you can go to hardware stores like Home Depot, Rona or Lowe’s. Generally, I recommend going to whichever one is closest to your house. They all have color swatches where you can choose from variety of colors. Also, they have brochures where professional color consultants have chosen certain colors that goes good together and current trends.
Choosing paint sheens
Once you have chosen the colors, you can take that color swatch to the paint department staff and ask them to mix it for you. Then they will be asking you what type of product you want that in. The following are the different product sheens that are generally used on different areas. The sheen of paint is the amount of shine that the surface has.
Paint for walls
Generally an eggshell sheen or finish is used for walls. As the name says, the amount of shine is like the shell of a chicken egg. This sheen is recommended for walls because the light does not reflect off of the wall surface. Yet it is durable enough that it doesn’t get dirty fast. It can also be washed.
Paint for trims, doors and baseboards
A semi-gloss finish or sheen is recommended for these surfaces because there is not a lot of surface that the paint sheen reflects off of. But it is still durable. This also makes these surfaces stand out and looks nice. Generally, a generic white looks good and for trim paint. Be sure to buy premium paint because these surfaces gets the most traffic. You don’t need to purchase a lot of it since there is less surface area as compared to walls and ceilings.
For ceilings, you want to use a flat sheen or finish because that is where the light reflects a lot. By using a flat finish, it absorbs the majority of light. Also flat finish hides imperfections on the ceiling. For ceilings you want to purchase cheap flat white paint because there is no traffic like walls and trim.
